In Leading for Research Excellence and Integrity: A Qualitative Investigation of the Relationship-Building Practices of Exemplary Principal Investigators, published this month in Accountability in Research, Drs. Alison Antes and James DuBois, describe practices for cultivating respectful workplace relationships in research labs. These practices were reported by 52 “Research Exemplars” the team studied to understand essential leadership and management practices of principal investigators. The exemplars are known for their scientific accomplishments and have reputations for professionalism and integrity.
Above all, the exemplars described the need to be intentional in cultivating a positive, collaborative environment. They relayed that the best science comes from groups that respect and trust each other. Furthermore, many commented that the PI sets the tone through leading by example.
